H\u00e9raklion a une population de 131 000 habitants (recensement de 2001), mais on pense qu&rsquo;environ 200 000 personnes vivent aujourd&rsquo;hui dans la municipalit\u00e9 d&rsquo;H\u00e9raklion et dans la municipalit\u00e9 voisine d&rsquo;Alikarnassos. H\u00e9raklion est la 4\u00e8me plus grande ville de Gr\u00e8ce. Il poss\u00e8de le plus grand port et a\u00e9roport de Cr\u00e8te. L&rsquo;a\u00e9roport d&rsquo;H\u00e9raklion est \u00e9galement connu sous le nom d&rsquo;a\u00e9roport international \u00ab\u00a0Nikos Kazantzakis\u00a0\u00bb, en l&rsquo;honneur de l&rsquo;\u00e9crivain cr\u00e9tois le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre au monde. La ville, b\u00e2tie sur une colline assez escarp\u00e9e, poss\u00e8de un immense port pour accueillir ferries et paquebots de croisi\u00e8re, et un a\u00e9roport international. H\u00e9raklion est anim\u00e9e, anim\u00e9e et pleine d&rsquo;h\u00f4tels, de fast-foods, de magasins et de trafic. La place principale de Plateia Venizelou est un centre commercial pi\u00e9tonnier avec des caf\u00e9s et des restaurants, avec quelques boutiques fascinantes dans les rues environnantes.
