Der Mythologie zufolge brachte Zeus, als er Europa aus Asien entf\u00fchrte, das erste Matala mit. Viel sp\u00e4ter, n\u00e4mlich in den 70er Jahren, wurde der Strand mit dem t\u00fcrkisfarbenen Wasser des Libyschen Meeres und den beeindruckenden H\u00f6hlen, die H\u00e4usern \u00e4hneln, zu einem Treffpunkt und Zufluchtsort f\u00fcr Tausende von kleinen Kindern aus Griechenland und dem Ausland (Blumenkinder).
